Smiths Falls residents are being invited to gather on the town’s new bridge at Confederation Park this Sunday for a special community celebration tied to National Indigenous Peoples Day.
Mayor Shawn Pankow says the event is meant to give more people a chance to enjoy the bridge, while also recognizing and celebrating Indigenous culture in the community.
The celebration gets underway at 6 p.m. Sunday on the bridge.
Pankow says the town wanted to create a public event after the official opening, knowing not everyone was able to attend.
The evening is expected to include a barbecue with hot dogs, hamburgers and other food. But the Mayor says there will more too.
Pankow says the blessings and smudging are expected around 7:30 p.m.
Pankow says at 8 p.m., a procession is planned from the bridge to the Healing Circle.
Pankow says the night is about respect, community and celebration.
He says it is a chance to pay tribute to Indigenous members of Smiths Falls and the broader area, while also giving residents an opportunity to share food, have fun and celebrate together.
