A new report to Smiths Falls council is outlining what steps the town would need to take if it wants to explore policing services through the Ontario Provincial Police.
Councillor Peter McKenna requested this information to come forward, so municipal election candidates understand what the transition process looks like, as the debate between a local police force and the OPP returns.
Council must first pass a resolution requesting an OPP review and submit it to the Ministry of the Solicitor General for approval. If approved, the Ontario Provincial Police develops a policing plan for public and council review. Council would then decide whether to approve a bylaw entering into an OPP policing contract.
Councillor Jay Brennan reiterated his support for the Smiths Falls Police Service.
The report notes there are currently no direct answers on whether the OPP is actively accepting new requests for costing proposals, though the OPP Municipal Policing Unit assisted staff in preparing the report.
