The Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) is preparing to show the public a shelter that has been transformed with animal care and safety in mind.
New Executive Director Bill Dickson says the building had reached a point where major work was needed.
Dickson says the work was made possible thanks to people who left money to LAWS in their wills. One wing was renovated in 2018, while another was finished earlier this year.
He says the updated shelter gives animals better spaces while also helping staff protect their health.
New arrivals are first kept apart until staff know whether they are sick or safe to be around other animals.
Once cleared, cats move into larger rooms where they can socialize with other cats, staff and volunteers.
LAWS plans to hold an open house once final cleanup work is complete.
