The Ontario Provincial Police say officers laid more than 19,000 traffic and marine charges during a week-long enforcement campaign across the province.
Police say the campaign was focused on keeping people safe on roads, trails and waterways during one of the busier travel periods of the summer.
According to preliminary numbers from the OPP, officers laid 19,133 charges during Canada Day week.
That included 8,603 speeding charges, 1,454 seatbelt charges, 412 impaired driving charges, 311 stunt driving charges and 243 distracted driving charges.
Police also reported 49 helmet charges and 11 marine safety equipment charges.
The OPP says the numbers show officers were watching for dangerous behaviour in several areas, including highways, local roads, off-road trails and lakes and rivers.
The campaign came as many communities saw heavier traffic tied to Canada Day events, vacations and summer travel.
Police say safety remains a shared responsibility, whether someone is driving, riding, boating or travelling as a passenger.
The OPP is thanking drivers and passengers who made safety a priority during the holiday week, while urging everyone to keep making responsible choices through the rest of the summer.
The OPP says enforcement will continue through the summer as officers work to keep communities safer on roads and waterways.
We expect local numbers in the coming days.
