A new pop-up art gallery in downtown Smiths Falls is turning an empty storefront into a bright community showcase for local and regional talent.

The Big Art Gallery is open at 25 Beckwith Street North, next to Boomtown Fusion Eatery. It will run through July and August, with original work on display and many pieces available to buy.
Leslie Richardson, executive director of the Smiths Falls and District Chamber of Commerce, says the idea grew from a quick conversation and a shared desire to bring more life to the downtown core.
Richardson says the project came together in just two weeks thanks to a community effort.
The gallery features artists from Smiths Falls, Rideau Lakes, Westport, Merrickville, Carleton Place, Ottawa and beyond.
Richardson says the show will change in August after a second round of juried selections.

Dixon has eight pieces in the show, including local scenes, Georgian Bay-inspired work and a Highland cow from a trip to Scotland. She says her earlier career as a photographer helped shape the way she paints.
Artist Donna McPhail is also part of the show, with eye-catching bird paintings that have already attracted buyers. She says the idea came from a search for unusual birds.

Oh yeah, it’s important to mention that the birds she paints have human arms.
McPhail says one visitor bought three pieces after seeing the artwork promoted online.
The gallery is free to visit and gives residents and tourists another reason to explore downtown Smiths Falls this summer.
The current lineup can be viewed Wednesday through Sunday, with regular hours listed as 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
A new group of Artists will be showcased in August.
