Two structure fires in Lanark County during last week’s extreme heat are prompting a fresh safety reminder from Perth’s fire chief.
Trevor Choffe, Perth’s director of protective services and fire chief, says local departments were busy as thunderstorms, outages and high temperatures created difficult conditions across the region.
Choffe says the incidents are a reminder for residents to check their homes before an emergency happens. He says working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should be installed on every level.
The Chief says anyone who is unsure about placement, testing or replacement should contact their local fire service for help.
Choffe says fire safety starts with two important things: prevention and, education & preparartion.
One of the fires was at the historic Caldwel Home in Lanark Highlands.
Choffe says any structure fire can be emotional for residents and difficult for crews, but firefighters are trained to focus on the job in front of them.
