Audiences looking for a night of laughter are finding plenty of it at Studio Theatre Perth, where The Play That Goes Wrong is now in its second week and drawing praise for its energetic cast, technical creativity and community spirit.
Directed by Carolee Mason, the comedy follows a fictional community theatre group attempting to stage a classic murder mystery. As the performance unfolds, nearly everything that can go wrong does go wrong, creating a fast-paced production filled with mishaps, misunderstandings and physical comedy.
Mason said the challenge of the show is that actors must convincingly portray performers struggling through a disastrous production while maintaining precise timing and control.
The production has been months in the making, with rehearsals beginning shortly after Easter. Mason said the cast and crew worked together to create the illusion of chaos while ensuring every moment is carefully planned.
The elaborate set, lighting and sound design all play important roles in delivering the comedy. Mason described the set as a giant puzzle, designed to both function and fail at exactly the right moments.
Board chair Bob Feduke attended a recent performance and said the production showcases the strength of local theatre in Perth.
Feduke said the cast, crew and technical team have come together to create an entertaining experience that keeps audiences engaged throughout the show.
Mason said finding the right performers was essential, noting that actors needed strong comic timing and the ability to handle demanding physical comedy.
She said the 11-member ensemble has developed a strong chemistry that adds to the production’s success.
Tickets for The Play That Goes Wrong are available through the Studio Theatre Perth box office and at the door. Organizers say the community response has been enthusiastic, with audiences leaving the theatre laughing and eager to share the experience with others
