A local woman is transforming a tragedy that changed her life into a project that is now helping families facing infant and pregnancy loss.
Jen Thompson, founder of The Soul’s Nest initiative, has partnered with students at Almonte District High School to create memory boxes for families who experience the loss of a baby.
Thompson said the idea was inspired by her own experience. 21 years ago, she gave birth to twin daughters who died at birth. She was given memory boxes that preserved keepsakes and memories of her children, and she still treasures them today.
After becoming certified as an infant and pregnancy loss doula, Thompson realized there was still a need for more support and more open conversations about grief and loss.
She brought her personal memory boxes to students and shared her story. The response was emotional, with some students revealing their own connections to infant loss.
Teachers reported that students worked on the project with unusual passion because they understood the impact the boxes could have on grieving families.
The initiative is already gaining support beyond the school. Thompson said local hospitals have reached out requesting boxes, while seniors at a retirement community have volunteered to knit blankets and hats for them.
Thompson hopes the project will continue to grow and help families feel supported during some of life’s most difficult moments.
