Alexander Park was filled with families, neighbours, community leaders and Town Staff Friday as Smiths Falls celebrated the rededication of one of its longtime green spaces.
The event included a free community barbecue, a ribbon cutting and plenty of opportunities for children to test the new playground equipment.

Located at the corner of Alexander Street and Rideau Avenue North, the park has served the area since the 1950s. Acting Mayor Peter McKenna said residents played an important role in shaping its future.
Town staff removed the aging ball field and play structures before rebuilding the property around the needs identified during that public consultation.
Smiths Falls Lead Hand of Operations Kyle Langdown said the work was intended to give the property a new purpose.
The completed space includes colourful slides, swings and climbing equipment. Gazebos, picnic tables and permanent barbecues also provide places for visitors to sit, eat and spend time together.
Smiths Falls Police Const. Sean Keogan welcomed the opportunities the park offered young people.
Councillor Jennifer Miller said Friday’s gathering showed how public spaces could improve life across town.
Children explored the equipment throughout the afternoon while adults enjoyed food, conversation and the warm community atmosphere.
Some, like Scott, brought their kids back to the park they used when they were growing up.
Langdown said the reaction showed the town’s planning and construction work had achieved its goal.
The rededication gave Alexander Park a fresh beginning after more than seven decades of serving the neighbourhood.
