While Rideau Lakes Mayor Arie Hoogenboom isn’t seeking a third term at the head of the table, he is considering running for council.
He told lanarkleedstoday.ca that he’s weighing his options to run for any ward seat, as there’s sitting councillors he would like to not see at the table in October.
We asked if he always intended to step down as mayor after eight years, or if this tension-filled term guided the decision.
Hoogenboom says it was a difficult decision not to seek a third term as mayor and apologizes to his supporters, but feels it’s the right time to step aside. He says he’s more than fit to serve as a councillor if he decides to run for a seat.
As of July 29th, there are two current councillors seeking re-election, and a former member.
Joan Delaney is seeking the mayoral seat after resigning from council midway through this term.
She is joined by former Perth Mayor John Fenik, who changed his decision to run in a crowded Ward 4 race for the top seat Wednesday.
Councillor Linda Carr is also seeking re-election in Ward 3, as is Marcia Maxwell in Ward 2.
The deadline to file nomination papers is August 21st.
