A now-defunct subsidiary of Smiths Falls-based Canopy Growth is fighting against the Canada Revenue Agency in court after being fined almost half-a-million dollars in November of 2020.
The fine was for allegedly growing cannabis on a Saskatchewan farm, before receiving a licence.
A statement of claim filed last month by the company in question argues the they were producing pot in accordance with its licence. The subsidiary, which operated an outdoor facility near St. Louis Saskatchewan, is asking the court to either waive the fine or reduce it.
The company closed in January of 2021.
It says the crops it grew at the facility in 2019 and 2020 were both destroyed; one because they couldn’t extract pot from the plants, the other because it was grown for research purposes.
