Affordable housing in the private market was highlighted in a report at Lanark County’s community services meeting on Wednesday.
The report makes 44 recommendations to help incentivize stakeholders and developers to meet the provincial definition of affordable housing in the private market.
SHS Consulting partner Ed Starr highlighted a handful of the 44 recommendations in their report.
He also told council too many people are paying more than they should.
This report was specific to the private market and not rent-geared-to-income opportunities.
The issue of affordable housing and affordability in general is expected to be a major talking point during the upcoming provincial and municipal elections.
Some suggestions made to council include establishing an affordable housing fund, rafting a municipal housing facilities by-law, and look at providing homeowners grants for renting out vacant homes.
