The Montreal Canadians and hockey fans around the world are mourning the loss of legendary forward Guy Lafleur.
Thousands of his fans were from Lanark County. They grew up watching the superstar play on Hockey Night in Canada.
Lafleur, known as “The Flower”, passed away at the age of 70. In recent years the Habs icon had been fighting lung cancer.
In a Facebook post this morning his sister Lise announced the news, writing in French, “Guy, I love you, your suffering is over, we will miss you immensely.”
Back in 2014 Lafleur Coached players from the Montreal Canadians Alumni in a charity game in Perth against local Blue Wings Alumni and other players. He didn’t play but his presence was welcomed by all fans.
Lafleur rose to fame as a highly sought-after rookie. During his 17-year career, he became the first player in National Hockey League history to score 50 goals in six consecutive seasons and 50 goals and 100 points in six consecutive seasons.
He lifted five Stanley Cups, all with Montreal, and his career included stops with the Rangers and Nordiques.
His latest cancer diagnosis came in October of 2020 when he announced it had been found in his right lung.
