Emergency Preparedness Week is underway.

Smiths Falls Fire Chief Rick Chesebrough said there’s a few initiatives they’re tackling this year.

They’ve prepared kits for children to jumpstart the conversation about the importance of being ready for emergencies at home and are putting out media releases to let the public know what they should have in a 72-hour emergency kit.

Chesebrough understands what everyone’s been through the past couple of years, but says now’s not the time for complacency.

He says with the warmer weather, natural disasters like wildfires, droughts and flooding are more likely.
