The OPP is warning that the grandparent scam is making the rounds in Eastern Ontario again.
It sees vulnerable people and seniors targeted by playing on their emotions and fear of a loved one being hurt or in trouble.
The victim usually gets a frantic phone call from someone claiming to be a grandchild or loved one. The caller says they’re in trouble and need money. They hand the phone off to someone they claim to be a lawyer or police officer. They also tell the victim not to tell anyone.
Police say scammers often get their information from social media. If you get one of these calls hang up.
If it makes you more comfortable call the grandchild or whoever they were claiming to be.
If you fall for it, call police.
