The hull of the replica is still intact. Those behind the project say there's lots to work with.
Lanark County will not provide financial support to a local group looking to refurbish the HMCS Haida replica warship which sailed the local waters as a tourist attraction for decades.
A presentation last month by Friends of the Haida saw the group ask the county to be a banker through charitable receipts and in-kind donations, while pegging the estimated restorations at around $200,000.
County CAO Kurt Greaves said he explored the idea further on behalf of council.
Greaves added that he had concerns surrounding the project.
Greaves also openly wondered about the door this could open with other requests should this one be approved.
The county has provided charitable receipts in the past, but it benefited the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail, an asset the county owns.
In the end council agreed with the auditors and shared the concerns expressed during the corporate services meeting discussion, and instead will provide the Friends of the Haida a list of other funding avenues they can seek to bankroll the project.
