A note from Carleton Place is a great reminder for all of us.
They say now is the time to wrap the trunks of your trees in burlap to prevent damage from Spongy Moths.
Burlap can be attached to the trunk of trees using a string in a band around the trunk and folded in half.
A release notes that often caterpillars will congregate in the burlap and this can be disposed of daily in compost or garbage.
They also say the caterpillars have long hairs that can cause skin irritation, so it is recommended to wear gloves while carrying out the work.
They have also provided a resource about how to wrap the burlap around the trunk of your tree from the City of Ottawa. You can find a step-by-step guide here.
