Chelsea Hillier, the daughter of former Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP Randy Hillier, has been ordered to pay $97,000 in damages for false and defamatory tweets made in November 2021 against a Carleton University English instructor.
The Ontario Superior Court of Justice made the ruling last Friday, three days after the case was heard.
The plaintiff said Hillier’s tweets damaged her reputation and mental health, and exposed her to harassment and humiliation.
Hillier did not defend the lawsuit and has been ordered to post a retraction, remove any content about the plaintiff and is prohibited from communicating any further false, defamatory, or disparaging statements about the plaintiff.
Hillier ran for the MPP seat this year as a member of the Populist Party of Ontario.
