The bandstand to sit at the new Smiths Falls Town Square will not proceed, at least for now.
Town council voted to delay the passion project of the late Tom Foulkes for his predeceased wife Pat and not award the tender to the lone applicant.
Foulkes donated $100,000 to ensure the bandstand could be constructed, and the town procured government funding for a significant portion.
Councilor Jay Brennan said it unfortunately came down to dollars and cents, and the compromises made to save money impacted Tom’s vision.
Councilor Wendy Alford said too much effort has gone into the project to not do it right.
There was just a single bid submitted which approached $325,000, a fee council couldn’t justify.
The over $200,000 in government funding council received for the project must be spent by mid-February, and town staff hope to re-tender the project in hopes of securing multiple bids.
