With the hot weather upon us, the health unit is reminding us to be careful.
They note that high heat can be hazardous to your health and can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and in some cases death.
They ask that we check on neighbours, friends and family who may be at a greater risk of suffering negative health consequences from the heat and humidity.
Among those who are at higher risk are the elderly, people with chronic illness or who take certain medications, infants and preschool children, people who have challenges with housing and shelter, and people who participate in physical activity or are involved in strenuous outdoor work for prolonged period.
If you are showing any of these symptoms after being exposed to the heat, seek medical attention immediately:
•Nausea, dizziness, blurred vision
•Difficulty or rapid breathing
•Severe headache or confusion
•Convulsion
•Fever
Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Paula Stewart, says it is important to keep cool, hydrated during heat waves.
And please, not matter what the reason may be, never, ever leave children, adults or pets in parked cars or sleeping outside in direct sunlight.
