The Community Safety and Well-being Advisory Committee for Lanark and Smiths Falls is condemning the racist and homophobic graffiti recently found in Perth.
Larry McDermott is a member, and Executive Director of Plenty Canada. He tells Lake 88 that despite these isolated incidents, there’s much to be proud of in our area.
He tells Lake 88 that these incidents don’t align with the current trend.
McDermott says to expect hateful graffiti not to pop up is unrealistic, but on the other hand investigations into hate crimes are increasing which means more accountability.
He recognizes that strides are being made locally when it comes to systemic racism, but there’s a way to go locally and on the national front.
If you see anyone in the act of spray-painting graffiti of any kind, call 9-1-1. Or report it to your town hall after the fact.
The Advisory Committee wants to send the message that hate in any form won’t be tolerated in Lanark County and Smiths Falls.
