Google Maps: The Confederation Bridge in June 2014
What seemed like growing momentum to a decades in the making decision on the future of the Confederation Bridge in Smiths Falls seemed to fall apart at the end of an hour-long discussion about the options presented to council Monday night.
Council appeared to have a verbal majority, but not unanimous, consensus to proceed with tearing down the existing bridge and replace it with a new one to include vehicle and pedestrian traffic, but confusion surrounded late-conversation comments from CAO Malcom Morris.
He said the intent of this latest report was to ask questions and direct staff to make another report based off Monday night’s comments.
Morris added council could make a decision based off the report from Monday night, but ultimately another staff report is what’s coming.
Councilors Peter McKenna and Niki Dwyer both said they were confused by Morris’ comments, and Dwyer voiced her frustration.
Earlier in the meeting, Councilor Wendy Alford said the bridge has “been a thorn in everyone’s side since 1984,” and thinks they’d be remiss not to make a decision one way or the other before the end of their term.
