The field for the LPGA’s CP Women’s Open in Ottawa is set and will include 18 Canadians, including 12-year-old Lucy Lin of Vancouver who qualified for the tournament on Monday.
All eyes around here of course will be on Smiths Falls native and past champion, Brooke Henderson.
Its the first time the tournament is being played in two years, thanks to a pandemic-induced hiatus. Booke tied for third in 2019 when it was played at Aurora, Ontario’s Magna Golf Club.
Brooke has been home in Smiths Falls for a few weeks now getting ready for the tournament. Connecting with family and friends in our area is vital to her success, she has said in the past.
As we lead up to the tournament, she has hosted kids at the venue, young golfers inspired by her 12 tour wins, including those two precious major titles. She connects with them on a personal player-to-player level. You can tell by watching how much the kids appreciate it.
She’s relaxed and ready to tee off in front of a home-country crowd, even if she has had to pose for about a thousand selfies as she makes her way around the course before anything gets serious.
Many people are making the short drive east to watch Brooke – many having played with her as she grew up at the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club, others just admiring what she’s accomplished.
Brooke has been a solid ambassador for her hometown, the game of golf, and our country. She represents us very well.
She has shone on the international stage many times and taken the CP Women’s Open title back in 2018. But that was in Regina. Now she hopes to bring home the trophy as close to home as possible.
Brooke continues practice rounds today at the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club, and will no doubt be busy greeting friends and fans as she does.
