Honoured in Mississippi Mills: Shery Smith, Al Potvin, and Jane Torrence
Mississippi Mills handed out their Community Builder Awards last week to three people, recognizing their contribution to life in the municipality.
Honoured were Al Potvin, Sherryl Smith, and Jane Torrence.
Mayor Christa Lowry says Al couldn’t be more deserving, as he has devoted his life to building his community.
Al who is in his 80’s he’s ensured that his estate will continue to serve the public for years to come. He’s sold it to a developer who shares that vision.
He’s also taken $1 million dollars from that sale to create the Al Potvin Family foundation to support children and youth’s needs in Mississippi Mills.
Lowry says Sherryl Smith is a former healthcare worker who uses her experience in her retirement.
The Mayor says she’s also working to help with the transition to the local health team from the former LHIN, and a board member for the health unit too.
Lowry says she’s just hitting her stride.
Jane Torrence rounds out the trio receiving the awards. The Mayor highlighted Jane efforts to bring back the beloved Puppet’s Up festival in Almonte as the Festival’s Director.
Jane has also worked with the Almonte Community Coordinators, been co-chair of the kilt-fest, done work for the legion as well, and worked with local youth, and that’s not all. The Mayor says people know Jane as a former Councillor, volunteer and community cheerleader in general.
Mayor Lowry says they will be working on expanding the awards in coming years, including awards for outstanding seniors, youth of the year and lot more.
