The Ontario Provincial Police is out with their report on their Labour Day long weekend blitz and the numbers are surprising.
In all, they laid close to 9,600 traffic related charges over the holiday weekend.
They report that their were five fatalities across Ontario on roadways, trails and in waterways that they patrol.
Among the lowlights: 6,232 speeding charges were laid, and another 123 charges for stunt/racing offences were issued. There were also 530 charges laid for improper seatbelt use.
People are still getting behind the wheel after drinking or taking drugs too. Officers laid 169 charges in all.
As for distracted driving, 129 of those charges were laid.
And it didn’t all happen on our roads. They note that several off-road vehicle drivers and boaters face tickets and charges too.
That said, the majority of us get it, and the OPP recognizes that. They want to thank those of us who travelled and played safely over the weekend, saying we protected ourselves and others.
