Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022 marks seven years since three acts of femicide took place in Renfrew County. The three women were killed by the hands of a former partner.
The jury at the inquest into the deaths of, Carol Culleton, Nathalie Warmerdam and Anastasia Kuzyk, released a series of recommendations to help put an end to intimate partner violence.
Today, Lake 88 begins a series looking at a different recommendation every Thursday.
We starting at the beginning with no.1:
Formally declare intimate partner violence as an epidemic.
Here’s Erin Lee, Executive Director at Lanark County Interval House.
Lee says other organizations around the world, like the World Health Organization have officially called violence against women an epidemic, and its time we do as well.
She commends the jury for making it the first recommendation and calls formally declaring violence against women as an epidemic step one in working towards a solution.
She calls the word “epidemic” both powerful and relatable.

Check back next Thursday morning for the next discussion.
