Chelsea Hillier will be sentenced October 20th after being found guilty of contempt of court last week.
The daughter of former controversial Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP Randy Hillier, Chelsea ran in the latest federal and provincial elections as a member of the People’s Party of Canada and the Populist Party of Ontario, and has faced legal trouble for social media posts regarding Carleton University instructor Esther Post.
Post sued Hillier for defamation earlier this summer which went uncontested, and the courts ordered Hillier to issue a contraction and pay almost $100,000 in damages.
Hillier issued the contraction, but 78 days after initially ordered, and she had tweeted 2,000 times in that span, leading to the contempt of court conviction.
During a court hearing Friday, Post’s counsel, Andrea Baldy, proposed a suspended jail sentence conditional on good behaviour for Hillier.
Hillier, represented by Doug Treilhard, took the stand during the proceedings after the lunch break Friday.
The case is being heard by Justice Narissa Somji.
