New research shows that Ontario family doctors left the profession at the start of the pandemic at double the rate of the years before COVID-19 hit.
Local departures during the time frame were largely due to doctors retiring. Filling their practices has been a challenge for local healthcare and municipalities working together to try to lure top talent to our listening area. Their efforts haven’t stopped.
A study led by Unity Health Toronto says about three per cent, or 385 doctors, across all of Ontario stopped practicing between March and September 2020.
Lead author Doctor Tara Kiran says those doctors accounted for an estimated 170-thousand patients losing access to primary care.
