Local Communities continue to work towards reconciliation.
Lanark County Warden and Perth mayor John Fenik says both Lanark County and the Town of Perth recently joined communities across our listening area by recognizing the land on which they’re meeting.
Fenik says that implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action are largely a federal and provincial government tasks, but municipal and county councils have a big role to play too.
Fenik says they have a responsibility to make sure that local indigenous voices can be heard in their communities.
The following is the Land Acknowledgement Statement adopted by Perth Town Council:
“We [I] respectfully acknowledge that the land on which we gather is the traditional home of various Indigenous Peoples. As we work towards reconciliation, may we all live with respect on this land and live in peace and friendship with all its diverse peoples.”
