Ontario education workers such as librarians, custodians and early childhood educators begin mediation today with the government in contract talks that have yet to produce a deal, or even optimism.
CUPE, which represents about 55,000 education workers in the province, said it welcomes the assistance of a mediator.
Hundreds of the workers involved in the negotiations in the Upper Canada District School Board of Eastern Ontario and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario.
Teachers are not included in the talks.
William Kaplan, the mediator, also helped CUPE and the government reach a contract in 2019.
The biggest sticking point is wages with both sides still far apart.
The goal here is to avoid job action such as a strike or work to rule campaign.
