The candidates for Mayor in the town of Perth tackled a broad range of topics in the town during the Lake 88 Perth Mayoral Candidates Round Table.
One of the key issues addressed was affordable housing.
Candidate and Current Councillor Judy Brown says its tough for a town to help lower housing costs.
She adds that the town would work with groups willing to tackle the issue, by selling town land for a dollar for the projects and supporting renovating unused properties to affordable housing units.
Candidate and political newcomer, Stephanie Drummond calls the housing system complex and says there has to be a cooperative effort at the federal, provincial and county levels.
She says by tapping into federal and provincial programs to improve housing, improvements to overall affordability would follow.
Current Mayor and Candidate for re-election John Fenik says the provincial government has to listen to municipalities.
Fenik says there won’t be a magic bullet to fix the issue, but he truly believes safe, affordable housing is a right. He says without it everything like education and work can come to a stop in your life.
