It looks like a gateway will be part of downtown Smiths Falls.
A gateway is a stylish location identifier, like the lit-up signs in Toronto and Ottawa.
An hour-long discussion didn’t resolve specifics but most of council agreed they want to pursue it.
Mayor Shawn Pankow said a gateway would continue the shifting tone of downtown.
As for what it may look like, Councillor Peter McKenna has his eyes looking ahead.
It will be on Beckwith Street, but council are divided on either the East or West side. The East would require the relocation of the Cenotaph, so staff will chat with the Legion to see if that’s a non-starter before moving ahead.
Councillor Jay Brennan opted out of talks altogether, saying he’d like to see a cost estimate before making up his mind on any matter. The estimated cost, the design, and location still need to be ironed out.
