Premier Doug Ford’s Conservative Government tabled a budget yesterday that they promise to pass if elected in the June vote. Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy delivered the budget yesterday at Queen’s Park.
The budget will essentially double as the party’s re-election platform as we head for the June General Election in Ontario.
At $198.6 billion, it is the largest budget in the province’s history, or would be if passed.
Many of the items featured have already been announced my cabinet members and MPPs across the province.
Here are some of the items introduced that could affect listeners in Lanark, Leeds, and Grenville.
- Hospital infrastructure projects will get more than $40 billion over the next decade.
- A new personal income tax credit will help offset the cost of some medical expenses for seniors up to $1,500.
- The province says it will boost tax relief for lower-income workers and families and increase the number of people qualifying for the break.
- Drivers have already seen the elimination of license plate stickers, and will also be able to better customize insurance to their needs and buy policies based on vehicle usage.
- There is also a promise to remove part of the gas tax so drivers see relief at the pumps.
Immediately after it was tabled Opposition Leader, Andrea Horwath of the NDP criticized it for a lack of action to improve affordability in the province, specifically mentioning the housing sector and rising costs of home-ownership and rental units across the province.
