The Village of Westport is getting into the hockey team ownership game.
At its Council Meeting on June 7th, Council approved the purchase of a National Capital Junior Hockey League franchise.
The deal was reached with the Bytown Royals and made official by the league on Monday.
The Village says that all hockey operations will be the responsibility of the Hockey Executive, headed up by Steve Merkley. Merkley is a former Westport Rideaus player.
The team is funded through player fees, sponsorship and fund raising. The purchase price of $17,500 will be covered by donations.
In a statement, the Village Council said it is very excited about having a Junior C team calling Westport “home”.
They hope the community comes out to watch the games when the season gets underway on September 24, 2022.
