Only five per cent of Ontario’s land is suitable for agriculture.
And that number will only be decreasing.
The most recent census shows the daily loss of farm land has increased from 175 acres per day in 2016, to 319 acres per day now.
That was Mark Reusser, vice president of The Ontario Federation of Agriculture. He said there are certain municipalities that are working to slow this loss of important land.
The vice-president added ways to help as an individual would be buying local produce, encouraging friends and family to do the same, and writing to municipal officials when buildings are proposed on former farms.
This protection is important now, because the changes are permanent.
He added that the pandemic showcased the importance of food security, with shelves being empty at grocery stores just two years ago.
