The Town of Perth has reacted to the announced closure of the Emergency Department at the town’s site of the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital.
It will be closed starting Saturday morning at 7am for several days as a result of a COVID-19 outbreak among staff.
Perth Mayor John Fenik says he spoke with Hospital Director Michael Cohen and Board Chair Gardner Church about the situation and agrees the temporary closure of the Emergency Department is “unavoidable.”
Mayor Fenik added, “As Mayor of the Town of Perth I, my Town Council, and the community’s expectation is that the 24/7 Emergency Department at the Perth site will be restored as soon as possible. Anything less is completely unacceptable.”
He added, “Over the next couple of days, I will be speaking with Provincial Minister Steve Clark and MPP John Jordon about this concerning turn of events and the possible solutions that may be available.”
Anyone requiring immediate medical attention should call 911; paramedics will route to the nearest emergency department for care. For other urgent care needs, the Emergency Department at the Smiths Falls site remains available 24/7.
Alternatively, the Carleton Place & District General Hospital and Almonte General Hospital are available as well.
When the ER re-opens, which could be several days from now, it will do so gradually. Keep listening to Lake 88 and watching LanarkLeedsToday.ca for updates.
