The OPP is warning about the dangers of sharing intimate images online, and what’s known as sextortion.
That’s when people are tricked into sending private, often nude pictures of themselves to someone they’ve met online only to be blackmailed for money to keep the pictures from going public.
OPP Acting Sergeant Erin Cranton tells us it can happen to anyone.
The acting Sergeant says it can lead to terrible consequences for victims.
To put it directly, everyone must be careful.
The Acting Sergeant says the easiest way to protect yourself is to not take the pictures in the first place.
Cranton also says parents need to talk with their kids about the dangers online so they can identify potential threats, and must keep an open line of communication to watch what their kids are doing online.
