With the summer in high gear now, and boats and swimmers filling our local lakes and rivers, it’s the perfect time to mark National Drowning Prevention Week.
The Lifesaving Society of Canada says over 400 Canadians drown in preventable water-related incidents every year.
They also note that drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional death among Canadians under 65 years of age and even one drowning is one too many.
If you’re out in a boat, canoe, jet ski – any water vessel at all – make sure you have a lifejacket on.
And always make sure you never swim alone, and remember drownings can start in mere seconds. So, watch kids in the water like hawks.
