The number of crimes of opportunity rises in the summer.
Among the most common is thefts from cars. Thieves see an opportunity presented by an unlocked door and pounce on it.
Constable Aaron Tompkins says its frustrating for victims and law-enforcement alike.
The Smiths Falls Police Service officer says that they know distractions, like carrying groceries or getting kids out of cars can lead to doors being left unlocked. Police understand accidents happen.
He suggests reminding yourself through routine.
The goal is simple: Take away the opportunity to commit the crime in the first place.
