Failing to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle is the OPP’s marquee infraction this Civic Holiday weekend.
Highway Safety Sgt., Kerry Schmidt tells us everyone wants to arrive alive this weekend including first- responders.
Despite the law being enacted almost 20 years ago, Schmidt says last year on OPP patrolled roads – some 900 charges were laid against motorists who failed to move over for stopped emergency vehicles.
Schmidt says since 1989, five OPP officers have been killed in traffic while investigating a roadside incident or helping a motorist in trouble.
It’s also worth noting the fine for breaking the move over law ranges from almost $500 dollars to $2 thousand dollars and three points against your license.
