Planet Youth Lanark County, the local volunteer group working to help apply the globally successful approach of dealing with youth substance abuse pioneered in Iceland, has been invited to provide information on their efforts to the British Columbia government.
Planet Youth Lanark County chair David Somppi, Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Paula Stewart, and CEO of Planet Youth in Iceland Páll Ríkharðsson, will appear virtually today to BC’s Select Standing Committee on Health.
Dr. Stewart and the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit have been strong supporters of the work of this initiative.
They will make a presentation and answer questions on Lanark’s progress in adopting the Icelandic model that has helped bring substantial reductions in substance abuse rates around the globe.
BC is mulling options as the province is dealing with record-setting overdoses and fatalities.
