The OPP is reporting a new twist on the so-called grandparent scam after a call in North Grenville.
Just last week they got a call from a complainant who reported getting a call from a crying female saying, “Mom I’m in trouble and need help”.
There’s the twist. Now people are pretending to be children of victims. Part of the reason the scam has worked in the past is that grandparents may not be as familiar with their grandchildren’s voices, especially if they’re in a panic.
The scammer told the potential victim she had been arrested for impaired driving and that a police officer would be calling her too. Once that call came, the scammer, pretending to be a police officer gave instructions on how to deposit $5,000 into an account.
Thankfully the intended victim reported the incident to police instead of going through with it.
