We have some details on Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones’ plan to stabilize the health-care system which comes as ER’s across the province deal with a staffing shortage.
It includes a program that can deploy nurses full-time across multiple hospitals, and sees more mid-to-late career or retired nurses mentor newer nurses.
The province will also temporarily cover most fees for internationally trained and retired nurses.
It also sees an investment of up to $57.6 million over three years to increase the number of nurse practitioners working in long-term care homes.
Legislation allowing long-term patients awaiting a bed to be transferred to a temporary home will be introduced and 300 beds that had been used for COVID-19 isolation will now be used for people on wait lists.
The plan also suggests a larger role for privately delivered but publicly covered services with the government covering the costs of some surgeries in private facilities, thus increasing overall capacity.
