Perth council’s committee of the whole spoke about a motion to adopt a land acknowledgement statement this week.
The statement proposed with input from a Northern Ontario indigenous mayor is:
“We respectfully acknowledge that the land on which we gather is the traditional home of various Indigenous Peoples. As we work towards reconciliation, may we all live with respect on this land and live in peace and friendship with all its diverse peoples”
After some discussion on which functions would start their proceedings with the statement, it was decided to recommend using it at full council meetings only.
