Meeting Queen Elizabeth II left a lasting impression on Jared Ruttan of Smiths Falls and her death left a mark that is just as poignant.
Jared met Her Royal Highness back in August of 2018, as a snare drummer with the Sons of Scotland Pipes and Drums. The Ottawa-based band travelled overseas performed for her at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
Jared is a gifted snare drummer and has performed in many spots near and far.
After the performance, The Queen walked through the group and engaged a few of the musicians in conversation. One of them was Jared.
We’ve heard over the years that the Queen was very down to earth when she met folks, especially young people. We asked Jared if that’s the impression he got.
Someone also caught that meeting with their camera.
Jared says The Queen was gracious, kind and encouraging. He said she asked him about his drumming experience and was impressed that, at the time, he had only been playing a few years.
Jared told us the meeting meant so much more, especially considering his upbringing.
All that made her death hit closer to home.
He says the encounter is something he remembers like it happened yesterday.
When the announcement was made official by Buckingham Palace late last week that the Monarch had passed away, Jared said it was almost like losing a family member. That’s the kind of impression she left on people.
He says he will always cherish the memory and the picture of him smiling at the Queen as she spoke to him and offers nothing but sympathy to the Royal Family and all mourning her loss.
