The Smiths Falls Rotary Club marked its 100th Anniversary last night with a special celebration at the Smiths Falls Golf & Country Club. The club first formed in 1922, just 12 years after the start of Rotary International.
Current President Stewart Blair says Rotary’s motto ‘Service Above Self’ has inspired thousands of clubs around the world to support education and healthcare, promote peace and fund Rotary International’s polio eradication project.
In keeping with those goals, the club presented a $25,000 cheque to Lianne Laing, Executive Director of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation.
Guest speaker and past Rotary District Governor Nabil Oudeh commended the club for the incredible impact they’ve had over the last 100 years in their support of the hospital, area schools, sports teams, youth programs and community facilities.
Long-time Rotarian Ken Graham was honoured with this year’s ‘Paul Harris Award’, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Rotary and years of service. The award is named after Paul Harris, the Chicago attorney who formed the world’s first Rotary Club in 1905.
