There will be several ceremonies across our listening area marking the National day for Truth and Reconciliation, and Orange Shirt Day.
Among them: The Lanark County Neighbours for Truth and Reconciliation will be hosting an Orange Shirt Day Ceremony at Last Duel Park in Perth. It begins at 5:30pm and honours the Indigenous children who suffered at Residential Schools and those who did not make it home, along with their families and communities.
It takes place at the Perth Healing Forest Memorial at the park.
The Perth & District Union Public Library is running a fundraising campaign to purchase books by and about Indigenous Peoples. A donation of $25 will cover the average cost of one book and if the campaign reaches its goal of $1500, the library will purchase 60 new books. Titles will be chosen from those recommended by Indigenous organizations and will be purchased through GoodMinds.com, an Indigenous book distributor, based in Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation. Donations to the campaign can be made online at the library’s website here or in person at the Library itself.
The town of Smiths Falls is hosting a Community Walk. All are invited to gather at Centennial Park at 6:15pm for the walk to Duck Island. The Town is also hosting a Community Sunset Ceremony. The Town’s water tower has been lit up in orange since the 19th and the ‘Every Child Matters’ flag has been raised at Lower Reach Park marking the day.
A special story time is taking place at the Carleton Place Public Library this morning. They will be reading stories written by Indigenous authors, and offering a colouring craft inspired by the work of Chief Lady Bird. Suggested ages 2-5, it gets underway at 10:30. The Town is also hosting a ceremony at Riverside Park beginning at 12:30. Participants are asked to bring a lawn chair.
