Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and that has asking what is the state of reconciliation in Lanark County?
Executive Director with Plenty Canada, Larry McDermott an Algonquin from Shabot Obaad-jiwan First Nation, who also serves on numerous First Nations committees in Lanark County and beyond, tell us a big part of the process is education. He cites the work being done by our local school boards as providing a good base.
Larry is also a member of the Lanark Community Safety and Well-Being Plan committee and says having Indigenous reconciliation be a big part of that plan is vital.
He also says that missteps can be made in the process, and Lanark County is no exception, taking two steps forward and one back at times.
Overall he says communities have been accepting, but much remains to be done.
