The concrete crosswalks slated to be installed at the intersections of Main, Russell and Elmsley Streets as well as the pedestrian crossover at Church Street in Smiths Falls has been put on pause.
Director of Public Works and Utilities Paul McMunn shared some concerns he had with council on maintaining the crosswalks after they’re in place.
He thinks water damage could occur at the joints of where the asphalt and concrete meet on the roads, which could create a headache for everyone down the road. He suggested painted ladder crosswalks instead.
Councilor Niki Dwyer understood McMunn’s concerns but feels the Beckwith Street design has warped significantly from its starting point because they’ve always erred on the side of caution.
The final decision was deferred to allow the next council to decide, but council did green light the striped sidewalks to be painted in the interim.
