Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston (dark red) with current boundaries.
Smiths Falls council is asking the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission of Ontario to keep the town within the Lanark County electoral district.
This request comes a week after Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MP Scott Reid presented some changes to the original ones being proposed by the commission.
Their plan would see Greater Madawaska, Merrickville-Wolford, Westport, and a portion of Elizabethtown-Kitley included in Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston, while dropping the northern part of Kingston.
One of Reid’s suggestions includes moving Kingston to Leeds-Grenville, while the other would keep it but move Smiths Falls to Leeds-Grenville to level the population.
Reid asked the Town to inform the commission of their support to stay within the riding or move to Leeds-Grenville so when he makes his presentation later this month, he has a clear understanding of where they sit.
Councillor Jay Brennan says it’s important to make their opinion known.
If the commission goes against their wishes, councillor Peter McKenna wanted to clarify a few things.
The commission conducts procedural boundary reviews every decade to account for population growth and density and make adjustments accordingly.
